Travel insurance is legally mandatory for all 29 Schengen countries (Europe) — you must have minimum €30,000 (₹27 lakh) medical cover to get a Schengen visa. Several other countries like Cuba, Ecuador and some Caribbean nations also require it. While not legally mandatory for most other destinations, it is strongly advised as a single medical emergency abroad can cost ₹15–50 lakhs.
Buy travel insurance as soon as you book your trip — ideally the same day. This is because trip cancellation coverage only protects expenses incurred after the policy start date. If you wait until departure, you lose the trip cancellation benefit. Insurers also cannot issue policies after your trip has started.
Standard plans generally exclude pre-existing conditions (PED). However, most plans cover a PED during a life-threatening emergency abroad. Senior citizen travel insurance plans offer limited PED coverage for life-threatening situations. Some premium plans offer optional PED add-on riders at additional cost. Always declare all pre-existing conditions honestly — non-disclosure can void a claim.
A single-trip plan covers one specific journey from departure to return. An annual multi-trip plan covers unlimited trips within a 12-month period, usually up to 30, 45 or 60 days per individual trip. For frequent travellers taking 3+ international trips per year, the annual multi-trip plan is more economical — it costs ₹3,500–8,000/year versus ₹500–1,200 per single trip.
Post-COVID, most insurers now offer COVID-19 coverage. Medical treatment for COVID abroad is covered under standard plans. However, trip cancellation due to government-imposed travel restrictions, fear of travel, or general advisories is typically excluded. Cancellation due to personal COVID diagnosis (confirmed positive test) before travel may be covered under select plans. Always read the policy wording carefully.
Yes, most insurers allow you to extend your policy while you're still abroad, as long as you haven't already made a claim and the extension request is made before the original policy expires. Extensions are typically available for up to 30 additional days. Contact Car Spider or the insurer's helpline before your policy expires to arrange an extension.
Required documents vary by claim type: For medical claims: original hospital bills, discharge summary, doctor's prescription, diagnostic reports. For trip cancellation: airline/hotel cancellation receipts, death certificate or medical certificate. For baggage loss: Property Irregularity Report (PIR) from airline, police FIR for theft, receipts for claimed items. For flight delay: airline delay certificate, hotel/meal receipts. Car Spider helps you compile all documents.
From September 22, 2025, the Government of India has waived 18% GST on individual and family travel insurance policies purchased at retail (not corporate/group). This makes travel insurance 18% cheaper for individual travellers. Corporate/group travel insurance policies continue to attract 18% GST, with ITC (Input Tax Credit) available for GST-registered businesses.
